Modes of language interpretation

http://www.dreamstime.com/-image18830131For the activity of language interpretation, a variety of methods have appeared that are currently in use. Each one has its advantages and disadvantages, making it more appropriate to a specific situation.

Consecutive interpreting

In the consecutive mode of language interpretation, interpretation is done sequentially. The message is divided in segments, the interpreter stands listening by the speaker of the source language. When the speaker takes a break, the interpreter renders that part of the message into the target language.

The main disadvantage of consecutive interpretation is that it takes twice as long as simultaneous interpretation. On the other hand, the technical requirements are much lower: small rooms need no special equipment, and bigger rooms need only a sound amplification sistem. If there is no such equipment available at the location of your event, we can provide it for you at an aditional fee.

There are situations when the translation of a document is necessary as part of consecutive interpretation work. This particular case combines interpretation with translation; the interpreter must render the document in the source language as if it were written in the target language. This is typically encountered in the legal and medical fields.

Simultaneous interpretation

In the simultaneous mode of language interpretation, the interpreter renders the message of the speaker from the source language into the target language, as fast as he can, talking at the same time as the speaker. The interpreter sits into a sound-proof booth, from where he can see the speaker; through an interpretation sistem can both listen to the speech and interpret it into the target language. Simultaneous interpreting is heard by the listeners of the target language into their headphones.

This method is used especially for situations where the message needs to be interpreted into more than one language, with limited available time.

The best practice for simultaneous interpretation is to use two interpreters, especialy for lengthy messages, containing high amounts of information. One of the interpreters will be actively interpreting for a while, with his colleague assisting him by keeping track of accurate terminology, figures, etc. The two interpreters then switch roles, as often as the pace and informational content of the message may require. This method ensures both continuous and high quality interpretations.

If there is no sound amplification or simultaneous interpreting equipment available at the location of your event, we can provide it for you at an aditional fee.

Whispered interpretation (Chuchotage)

A particular case of simultaneous interpretation is whispered interpreting. The interpreter sits next to a small group of target language listeners, and whispers a simultaneous interpreted message to them; this method needs no special equipment, but can also be delivered through headphones. Whispered interpretation is typically used for situations where there is a small group (ideally no larger than three people) that speaks a different language than the majority of the listeners.
